Growing Diversity
The project addresses a clear demographic trend, as Eurostat data shows that the diversity in EU classrooms is growing. As of January 1, 2024, 44.7 million people living in the EU (9.9% of the total population) were born outside the EU, and this proportion has increased in most member states over the last decade.
The Belonging Gap
The project's focus on belonging is critical, as migrant students often face significant social barriers. Research confirms this "struggle to find a sense of belonging," with one study finding that over 70% of surveyed migrant students reported experiencing social isolation, bullying, or discrimination in their school environments.
The Academic Gap
"The project aims to improve "academic success" by tackling the well-documented performance gap. PISA data has consistently shown that students with an immigrant background lag behind their non-immigrant peers. This gap is also seen in post-school outcomes, where foreign-born 15-29 year-olds are significantly more likely to be Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET)—16.7% for foreign-born vs. 11.8% for native-born, according to the OECD.
